{"id":5,"date":"2011-04-04T17:06:35","date_gmt":"2011-04-04T21:06:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/?page_id=5"},"modified":"2011-08-28T23:15:36","modified_gmt":"2011-08-29T03:15:36","slug":"the-genesis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/?page_id=5","title":{"rendered":"The genesis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The story of <em>Awakenings<\/em> began in 2001, when I got the go-ahead to write a fiction serial for my college newspaper. \u00a0The first installment of <em>The Vision<\/em>, as it was then entitled, involved college junior Marin Astoris seeing a vision of a mushroom cloud rising in the distance and hearing a voice whisper <em>take a breath and wait to die<\/em>. \u00a0It was scheduled to run in the September 13, 2001 edition of the paper.<\/p>\n<p>The events of September 11, 2001, ensured that the story never ran, and I switched gears, instead writing the original incarnation of <em>What Once Was Lost<\/em>, which ran for the 2001-2002 school year. \u00a0<em>Discovering Phoenix<\/em> followed in the fall semester of 2002 but was never finished, cut from the paper due to space constraints and the paper has not had a fiction serial since.<\/p>\n<p>The tale begun with Marin&#8217;s vision, however, never quite left me. \u00a0She always had a place in the back of my mind, whispering that she and hers had a story to tell. \u00a0In 2008, I decided to adapt her story into my <a title=\"National Novel Writing Month official website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nanowrimo.org\" target=\"_blank\">NaNoWriMo<\/a> project, <em>Awakenings<\/em>. \u00a0Graduate school conspired against me and ensured that I failed to finish the piece. \u00a0<em>Awakenings<\/em> and its sequel,\u00a0tentatively\u00a0entitled <em>Ambrose<\/em>, have waited patiently for the attention that they so richly deserve from me.<\/p>\n<p>The decision to serialize <em>Awakenings<\/em> on the web was inspired by a most unlikely source: webcomics. \u00a0I have been a reader of many of these over the years. \u00a0Most recently, I have followed the work of <a title=\"Sarah Ellerton's webcomics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seraph-inn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Ellerton<\/a><em> (Inverloch<\/em>, <em>The Phoenix Requiem<\/em>, and with Bobby Crosby, <em>Dreamless<\/em>) and <a title=\"The Dreamer webcomic by Lora Innes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thedreamercomic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lora Innes<\/a> (<em>The Dreamer<\/em>). \u00a0Works such as these and a desire to not only reconnect with my original fiction but to share it with more than just a handful of (occasionally\u00a0ravenous) readers selected from the ranks of personal friends has fueled this project.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you enjoy what you find here.<\/p>\n<p>Any questions or comments can be directed to doc (at) embklitzke (dot) com. \u00a0More information on my work beyond <em>Awakenings<\/em>\u00a0can be found at <a title=\"Doc Says Rawr!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.embklitzke.com\" target=\"_blank\">www.embklitzke.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The story of Awakenings began in 2001, when I got the go-ahead to write a fiction serial for my college newspaper. \u00a0The first installment of The Vision, as it was then entitled, involved college junior Marin Astoris seeing a vision &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/?page_id=5\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-5","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/P1EBlN-5","jetpack_likes_enabled":true,"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/5","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=5"}],"version-history":[{"count":4,"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/5\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":649,"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/5\/revisions\/649"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/awakenings.embklitzke.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=5"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
