Neve stiffened next to her.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s someone here,\u201d she whispered, her throat tight and mouth dry.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s someone near enough that I can feel it.\u00a0 Do you feel it, too?\u201d<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t wait to hear what Marin would say; she forced herself back to her feet and clutched the borrowed blanket around her shoulders as she got her crutches back underneath her again.\u00a0 Her heart was beating fast, too fast.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s someone or something here and I\u2019m not sure I like any bit of it.<\/i>\u00a0 She caught her lip between her teeth and had hobbled to the door by the time Marin was on her feet and coming after her.<\/p>\n
\u201cNeve, slow down!\u201d<\/p>\n
Her heart was hammering too fast for that.\u00a0 Marin grasped her shoulder and Neve cursed under her breath as pain shot through her collarbone.\u00a0 Marin\u2019s fingers sprang open and the other woman cursed softy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d Marin said.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know.\u201d\u00a0 Neve took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly.\u00a0 \u201cBut we\u2019ve got to move.\u00a0 There\u2019s something here<\/i> and I can feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou keep saying that,\u201d Marin said as she grabbed the lamp and shoved her feet into her boots, \u201cbut you\u2019re not explaining it and I\u2019m not following what you are<\/i> saying.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2014\u201d\u00a0 Neve stopped, swallowing hard.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not sure what or who it is,\u201d she said after a moment.\u00a0 She grasped Marin\u2019s arm, fingers digging in.\u00a0 \u201cBut I know it\u2019s powerful.\u201d\u00a0 That could be really good or really bad.\u00a0 I just\u2026it feels familiar.<\/i>\u00a0 \u201cAnd I think I\u2019ve felt it before.\u201d<\/p>\n
Marin shook her head as she yanked on her jacket.\u00a0 \u201cThat could be really good or really bad. \u201c\u00a0 She checked the lamp, then nodded toward the door.\u00a0 \u201cGo, I\u2019ll follow with the light.\u201d<\/p>\n
Neve nodded and started into the corridor, moving as fast as she dared, Marin following close on her heels.\u00a0 Her throat was tight and her heart was trying to batter its way past her breastbone and out of the cage of her ribs.\u00a0 Why is it so familiar?\u00a0 Dammit!<\/i><\/p>\n
They pressed on past the fire, startling Rory, who blinked at them, half rising.<\/p>\n
\u201cMar, what\u2019s the\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJust stay there,\u201d Marin snapped as they kept moving.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know, just stay there.\u201d<\/p>\n
None of us know, but she\u2019s right.\u00a0 He needs to stay right where he is until we know more.<\/i><\/p>\n
