His face backlit by the flames of the forge, Matt snorted softly, the sound barely audible over the roar of the flames and the hiss of the bellows.\u00a0 \u201cGood luck wishing to stop see them, Jay,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know that you\u2019ll ever get it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not something I asked for,\u201d J.T. said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNone of you asked<\/i> for the gifts that you have,\u201d Thordin said as he pushed Cameron deeper into the dim warmth.\u00a0 \u201cBut you\u2019ve got it just the same and you\u2019ve got it for a reason.\u00a0 Are you two feeling as unsettled as I am?\u00a0 I don\u2019t like the sound of that wind.\u201d<\/p>\n
He almost regretted giving voice to the words, but the look on the faces of his companions told him it was undoubtedly the right thing to do.\u00a0 Concern creased Thom\u2019s brow and J.T. suddenly became very interested in his boot laces.\u00a0 Matt snorted again and shook his head.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe better question is, has anyone told the girls?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Thom said firmly.\u00a0 \u201cAnd you\u2019re not, either.\u00a0 Not until we know whether or not we\u2019re just being damned well paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd when has it ever been simple paranoia?\u201d\u00a0 Matt asked as he straightened from pumping the bellows.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnce or twice,\u201d Thom said.<\/p>\n
Matt shook his head.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t believe you.\u00a0 Thordin, take over, will you?\u201d<\/p>\n
Thordin frowned, but switched places with Matt.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cRound up Kellin and my sister,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cMaybe one or two of the others and bring them up here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWouldn\u2019t it be easier to just go back down there?\u201d\u00a0 Cameron asked, glancing toward the door.\u00a0 He shivered slightly, as if remembering the wind and thinking better of his suggestion.<\/p>\n
\u201cPossibly,\u201d Matt said.\u00a0 \u201cBut there\u2019s also greater chance of being overheard, and nobody in this room wants that if we\u2019re just\u2014how did you put it, Thom?\u00a0 Just being paranoid?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMarin was getting some extra sleep, Matt,\u201d Thom growled.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t you dare wake her.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf something\u2019s about to show up and eat us, I\u2019m pretty sure she\u2019d want to be awake for that.\u201d\u00a0 He shrugged into his coat and headed for the door.<\/p>\n
\u201cNobody said anything\u2019s coming to eat us,\u201d J.T. said.<\/p>\n
