Marin glanced up from her book and toward Neve, who sat with one knee drawn to her chest against the wall of the shelter she still shared with Cameron\u2014though Cameron had been sharing Thordin\u2019s for the past few days.\u00a0 \u201cWho is?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know who,\u201d Neve said, sighing softly and tilting her head back to stare at the rough-hewn beams above her head.\u00a0 \u201cThe boys.\u00a0 They can feel there\u2019s something about to happen but they\u2019re staying mum about it because the last thing they want is for us to worry our pretty little heads about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Marin snorted softly.\u00a0 \u201cRaising your voice to that pitch is a nice touch.\u201d\u00a0 She took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you actually expect from them, Neve?\u00a0 Really, what do you want them to do, tell us every time they\u2019ve got a bad feeling about something?\u00a0 Of course they\u2019re going to try to keep us from worrying right now\u2014especially when there might not be anything to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo you don\u2019t think that\u2019s something\u2019s about to happen?\u201d<\/p>\n
Marin sighed.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m in a constant state of waiting for the other shoe to drop these days, Neve.\u00a0 I have to hope that somehow we\u2019ll get lucky and the ominous warning we\u2019ve gotten is simply preemptive, a cautionary warning.\u201d<\/p>\n
Neve shuddered visibly.\u00a0 If I believe there\u2019s something actually wrong, does that mean I actually believe that Leinth showed up to warn us?\u00a0 Or does that mean I think that she\u2019s got something to do with whatever\u2019s about to happen to us?<\/i>\u00a0 It was a question that had been on her mind for days, since their encounter.\u00a0 She couldn\u2019t blame Cameron for the accident of his lineage\u2014she\u2019d forgiven him that much, at least\u2014but she couldn\u2019t quite shake the feeling that there was far, far more happening than any of them realized.<\/p>\n
She started to voice another concern to Marin when the door slammed open.<\/p>\n
