“Thom!\u00a0 Thordin!”
\n\tThordin twisted in his saddle toward the sound of a familiar voice, cursing under his breath.\u00a0 What’s Cameron doing here?\u00a0 We left him behind on purpose.\u00a0 One of them had to stay with Neve and Marin.\u00a0 We chose him.<\/em>\u00a0 He reined up abruptly, wheeling his horse into a sharp turn.\u00a0 Rory swore and hauled back on his own reins.\u00a0 Thom and Jacqueline pounded on another dozen feet before they both pulled their mounts to a stop and turned.
\n\t“Cameron!” he barked.\u00a0 “What the hell are you thinking?”
\n\tCameron reined up alongside him, the hilt of Caliburn glinting in the moonlight as it peeked up over his shoulder.\u00a0 “It’s Phelan.\u00a0 The skinchangers are coming after him again.\u00a0 We’ve got to–”
\n\t“Do something.\u00a0 I’m aware.”\u00a0 Thordin’s eyes narrowed.\u00a0 “You should have stayed.”
\n\t“Marin and J.T. weren’t giving me much choice,” Cameron said.\u00a0 He glanced beyond Thordin toward Thom, who’d trotted his horse back to them.\u00a0 “Marin basically said if one of us didn’t go, she was going to go herself and we all know that she’d have done it–and Neve never would have forgiven me if something happened to Phelan and I didn’t at least try to stop it.”\u00a0\u00a0 Their breath steamed in the chill air as they looked at each other in the darkness.
\n\t“We’re wasting time,” Thordin growled, trying to tamp down his anger and annoyance.\u00a0 He should have suspected that they’d realize something, that they’d send someone to try to warn them–to warn Phelan.
\n\tHe just hadn’t expected it to be Cameron<\/em> of all people.
\n\tYou send the bloody heir to the bloody sword <\/em>with the bloody sword out into the wilds to face down a horde of beast-men who won’t stop until their quary’s dead.\u00a0 When are we going to learn our lessons about how this should all work?<\/em>
\n\tThom shook his head.\u00a0 “What’s done is done.\u00a0 Let’s keep moving.”
\n\t“Indeed.”\u00a0 Thordin kicked his horse back into motion again, trusting the rest to follow in his wake.
\n\tThere wasn’t enough time<\/em> for apologies and explanations, not when the Taliesin’s life was at stake.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
