I had<\/em> to take that deep, steadying breath before I dared continue.\u00a0 Thom wrapped an arm around my shoulders and squeezed me tight against his side.\u00a0 It took everything I had not to just bury my face in his shoulder and hope that everyone had forgotten what I\u2019d just said.<\/p>\n

No luck, of course.\u00a0 Not like that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been seeing things coming to attack us in fits and snatches for months,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cSome worse than others.\u00a0 In hindsight, I thought some of what I saw were camazotzi <\/em>coming to attack us, or the dirae<\/em>, but maybe I was wrong\u2014or right.\u00a0 Maybe my subconscious wasn\u2019t trying to somehow protect me by slotting in new monsters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense, Mar,\u201d J.T. said, frowning as he moved away from the edge of the barrow, hands shoved deep into his pockets.\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you trying to say?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cI just thought that maybe I\u2019d just remembered the vision wrong, that what I\u2019d seen were actually those and not something new and equally dangerous.\u00a0 It was easier to think it was that than to face the fact that we might have to fight more<\/em> monsters before things realize that it\u2019s best to just leave us well enough alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shivered.\u00a0 There were so many things out there that I didn\u2019t want to think about, let alone talk about.<\/p>\n

Like seeing Thom attacked by things that I can see and he can\u2019t.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAre you all right?\u201d\u00a0 Phelan asked, brows knitted in concern.\u00a0 I shivered again and shook my head.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat wasn\u2019t a good question to ask,\u201d I told him.\u00a0 \u201cWhat do you think the answer is?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking both questions were stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom shook his head slightly. \u201cYou could be right, but we had to.\u00a0 We have to know if one of us has seen something that might help.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know that what I saw could help.\u201d\u00a0 I sighed, staring at the barrow.\u00a0 \u201cWe have to watch everywhere, because they\u2019ll come from everywhere.\u00a0 We have to make sure we\u2019re ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just not sure how that\u2019ll happen.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What the hell does \u201cready\u201d actually mean?<\/em><\/p>\n
