I grimaced and shook my head. \u201cDon\u2019t ask questions you don\u2019t want to know the answers to, Neve.\u201d<\/p>\n
She winced and sighed, reaching for the next book in the stack. It had taken us practically all winter, but we\u2019d managed to catalogue most of the books salvaged from the university library\u2014most<\/em> of them. There were still a few boxes left, and Neve and I had been stringing the project along, not quite ready to be done with the task just yet. No one bothered us while we were with the books\u2014it was like some kind of unspoken rule. She and I could talk about anything without fear of being overheard.<\/p>\n Of course, that might have had something to do with the day that she\u2019d thrown an encyclopedia at Rory when he\u2019d walked in at the worst possible moment. He\u2019d had the bruise for weeks.<\/p>\n I slumped into my usual chair with a heavy sigh and watched her as she flipped open the book to the first few pages. \u201cHe\u2019s taking Thom with him.\u201d<\/p>\n She glanced up from the book, pen poised over the legal pad next to it. \u201cThom didn\u2019t mention anything like that to you, did he?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBingo.\u201d<\/p>\n Neve shook her head. \u201cI thought that you agreed that you two wouldn\u2019t do that to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe usually don\u2019t.\u201d I scrubbed my hand over my face. \u201cI\u2019m sure he was just waiting for the best moment to tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhich I\u2019m sure would be right before they left when you had absolutely no time to stop them.\u201d<\/p>\n I smiled ruefully. \u201cI wish you weren\u2019t right about that.\u201d<\/p>\n She shrugged and grinned back. \u201cI think we\u2019re starting to know each other\u2019s significant others pretty well at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe do,\u201d I agreed, then sighed again. \u201cWhat are we going to do, Neve?
