Thom was dead asleep when I slipped into our room and stayed that way as I quietly changed into something to sleep in, but woke as I eased into bed with him.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny change?\u201d he mumbled as he rolled over to make room for me to tuck myself against him.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d I told him as I slid beneath the covers and cuddled against his chest. \u201cLeinth says he sleeps, but there\u2019s no real change.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess that\u2019s the best news we can hope for,\u201d Thom murmured into my hair, his arms sliding around me and drawing me close. I sighed and buried my face in his shoulder.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe can\u2019t die, Thom,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause we need him?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I don\u2019t want him to.\u201d I sighed, sagging and biting my lip. \u201cBecause it would be senseless, because goddammit anyway, it was stupid and he shouldn\u2019t have tried to go alone and he shouldn\u2019t have tried to deal with it without Sif with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat does she\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe needs him,\u201d I interrupted. \u201cAnd he needs her and they\u2019re both too damned stubborn to see it. At least they were. Maybe she\u2019s not anymore. Maybe he still is. Damn them both anyway.\u201d I rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling in the darkness. Thom reached up and ran his fingers through my hair.<\/p>\n
\u201cMarin.\u201d<\/p>\n
I drew a shuddering breath and exhaled it in a sigh. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Thom.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve got nothing to be sorry for,\u201d he said, sitting up, the blankets falling away from his bare chest. \u201cYou\u2019re upset and that\u2019s fine. We can\u2019t solve their problems for them, though. That\u2019s something they need to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe needs to live if they\u2019re going to do that, Thom.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI agree.\u201d He leaned down, kissing me gently. \u201cYou know that they\u2019re doing everything they can.\u201d<\/p>\n
