\u201cWe haven\u2019t come to bring you any harm,\u201d Seamus said, his voice still a rasp, his expression bleak as Thom glanced at him\u2014that much was clear, even with his blurry vision. What was going on with the older man? \u201cYou must believe that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMust is a very strong term,\u201d she said, her gaze cold as she stared back at him. \u201cI\u2019m not entirely certain that there is anything that I must<\/em> do in this situation. We don\u2019t even have to let you live. It would likely be safer if we didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be ill-advised,\u201d Cameron said, swallowing hard. \u201cThere are people who love us that would come looking. They know where we were going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom\u2019s throat tightened. Don\u2019t. Don\u2019t keep going, Cameron. That\u2019ll put them in danger and we don\u2019t need that.<\/em><\/p>\n

God, we shouldn\u2019t have come. I should have stood my ground, should have argued.<\/em><\/p>\n

Why did I listen?<\/em><\/p>\n

He cleared his throat. \u201cDo you have a name?\u201d he asked the woman. He forced his tone to be casual, kept his voice even. It was harder than he could have imagined it would be.<\/p>\n

Damn. I\u2019m actually afraid.<\/em><\/p>\n

She regarded him for a long moment, crossing her arms. \u201cWhy do you want to know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, if you\u2019re going to kill us, I don\u2019t see the arm in your sharing it,\u201d he said, knowing that the comment may come off as flippant. Just keep her talking. Just…the longer she\u2019s talking, the more chances we\u2019ve got to convince her that we\u2019re friends, that we\u2019re not here to hurt them.<\/em> \u201cAnd if you don\u2019t, then we\u2019ll be even, won\u2019t we?\u00a0\u00a0 You already know my name.\u201d<\/p>\n

She sniffed, shaking her head. \u201cNot yet, I don\u2019t think,\u201d she said softly. \u201cWhere did you come from? How did you…how did you survive?\u201d<\/p>\n
