\u201cDidn\u2019t look like you were carrying all that much,\u201d she said, lips pursing. \u201cThough I suppose that since this was mostly just an exploratory expedition, the caution and the small amount of trade goods makes more sense.\u201d She exhaled a sigh, leaning back. \u201cHow far are you planning to go?\u201d<\/p>\n
Thom glanced at Cameron, arching a brow. Cameron gave Lara a tight smile. \u201cProbably only about another week or so on the road. We don\u2019t want to stay away for too long\u2014lots of stuff going on back home.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI can only imagine.\u201d Her smile was a little more real this time, gentler. \u201cWell, finish that and I\u2019ll give you the tour and you can show me what you\u2019ve got to trade. Maybe we\u2019ve got something that you could use in kind.\u201d<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t give them the chance to protest or stop her before she was up and out the door. It clicked quietly closed behind her and the four men were abruptly alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d Cameron asked after a long moment of silence. \u201cCan we trust her? Trust them?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, so far as we know they didn\u2019t put the Hecate on Phelan\u2019s scent,\u201d Thom said quietly, setting down his mug. \u201cAnd she seemed genuine when she talked about what happened here.\u201d He rubbed at his temple, turning the brief vision he\u2019d had over in his mind. \u201cI think she\u2019s okay. Just…really, really paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCan you blame her, if she\u2019s telling the truth about what happened here?\u201d J.T. shook his head. \u201cI know I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
Thom glanced toward Seamus. \u201cAnything to add?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Seamus said quietly. \u201cI think you\u2019re right. We can trust her\u2014at least for the moment. I don\u2019t think she\u2019s out to harm us or betray us.\u201d<\/p>\n
