I winced, trying to ignore the sound of \u00c9riu\u2019s ghostly voice. I glared into the fire, as if that would make the kettle of water I\u2019d settled over it boil faster.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d left everyone else to deal with that Leviathan character and whatever was going on beyond the walls. Maybe Phelan and Thom were right\u2014sometimes, you had to let someone else deal with the problem for the sake of your own sanity.<\/p>\n

This had been one of those moments, I\u2019d realized as soon as I\u2019d stepped through the gates. It was time for me to let someone else fight a battle for once.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarin, please. Don\u2019t ignore me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I could feel a chill, heralding her nearness. I exhaled a heavy sigh, tilting my head toward the sound of her voice, unable to keep weariness out of my voice. \u201cWhy, \u00c9riu?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve lost two mothers already, Marin. I don\u2019t want to lose another.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

A shudder ran through me and I couldn\u2019t suppress my flinch. \u201cThat was low.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAt least you\u2019re listening now.\u201d<\/em> I could see her, faint in the firelight, translucent and ethereal, looking like a seventeen-year-old version of herself even though she\u2019d died well after that age. She knelt next to me, her spectral lips thinning as she pressed them into a hard line. \u201cThey\u2019re not all real, Marin. They\u2019re not all real, they\u2019re not all ghosts, and they weren\u2019t all human.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

I blinked at her. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLeviathan\u2019s army! The spirits he brought with him. Not all of them are real, not all of them are ghosts, and they\u2019re not all human.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that mean, \u00c9riu?\u201d I asked, my heart starting to beat a little faster.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d<\/em> she said, her tone bleak. \u201cBut I know enough to know that I don\u2019t like it and there\u2019s something going on here that\u2019s not going to end well for any of us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
