Phelan took a few moments to gather up his herb satchel and his staff before rushing out the door after Jacqueline. He caught up with her after a few steps and took her hand, squeezing it. She shot him a tight smile in the dim of the hallway, edging closer as the wind rattled the roof above them.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I didn\u2019t know better, I\u2019d swear that wind was a living thing,\u201d Jacqueline murmured, tucking herself carefully under his arm. \u201cIt sounds like it\u2019s trying to peel the roof right off so it can get to us. Maybe cook us with some of that lightning or use the rain to make a nice soup.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at her askance, a brow arching. \u201cMorbid, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n
Jacqueline choked on a laugh. \u201cMaybe a little bit. I think the rest of you are rubbing off on me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, don\u2019t let us rub too hard.\u201d He kissed her temple and sighed quietly. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not your fault we got interrupted\u2014and it was for a good<\/em> reason this time instead of some horrible awful thing.\u201d<\/p>\n Phelan nodded, staring blankly ahead for a few moments. \u201cYeah. It just feels like something out there\u2019s conspiring against us.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe you should have a discussion with fate.\u201d<\/p>\n He choked on a laugh. \u201cOnce I find her, we\u2019ll have some words. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m going to hold you to that, you know.\u201d She gave him a quick, impish smile and he grinned back.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019d expect nothing less.\u201d<\/p>\n Thordin\u2019s door loomed in front of them.
