Phelan gave his friend a long, hard look and shook his head slowly. \u201cIt\u2019s still better I go out to the arboretum instead of them bringing whoever this is up to camp. It\u2019s warded ground up there and it\u2019s close enough that folks here can respond to a scream.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDid you really have to say that?\u201d Jacqueline asked, looking up from Thordin\u2019s bandages. \u201cI was okay with this plan up until you said that, Phelan.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing to worry about.\u201d He touched Jacqueline\u2019s shoulder and leaned in to steal a quick kiss. \u201cEverything\u2019s going to be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t know that for sure,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n
\u201cNot even Thom and Marin would know it for sure,\u201d he admitted. \u201cBut my gut\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going on your gut, Phelan?\u201d Thordin frowned darkly. \u201cSif, go with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
From her position next to the door, Sif arched a brow. \u201cAre you giving me orders now?\u201d<\/p>\n
Thordin winced and glanced away. \u201cI meant\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
Sif smirked. \u201cRelax. I was already going to shadow his sorry arse. It\u2019s the least I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel so loved,\u201d Phelan said dryly. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing to worry about, I swear.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cLet us worry anyway.\u201d Jacqueline stood up and took his face in her hands. The kiss she gave him made his heart skip a beat and made him wonder\u2014not for the first time\u2014exactly what he\u2019d done to deserve a woman like her. Phelan wrapped his arms around her waist and held her tight against him through the kiss. She rested her forehead against his when they both came up for air.<\/p>\n
\u201cBe careful,\u201d she whispered. \u201cPromise me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAlways,\u201d he vowed, kissing her again, more lightly this time. \u201cI swear.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen go,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd quick, before I change my mind about coming with you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Phelan smiled wryly and squeezed her before he let go.<\/p>\n
