\u201cI honestly can\u2019t believe what I\u2019m hearing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aoife\u2019s expression hardened as she stared back at me over the cooking fire. \u201cWhat\u2019s that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means that I think you lost a few marbles between here and Pennsylvania.\u201d I stood up, drying my hands on the seat of my pants. \u201cWe all talked about this. We\u2019re leaving it alone. If my brother can hold her in check somehow, then we\u2019ll let him do it\u2014and I\u2019m not going to let anyone endanger him<\/em> by launching some kind of offensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you actually mean to tell me that you think it\u2019s safe to leave her alive?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is exactly what I\u2019m saying.\u201d A dull pounding rose behind my eyes. Had she actually thought that I\u2019d think her plan was a wonderful idea? \u201cUnless or until she becomes a threat\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe will always<\/em> be a threat, Marin.\u201d Aoife\u2019s eyes blazed as she marched around the fire to stand toe-to-toe with me. \u201cShe will never<\/em> stop. You know that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t,\u201d I said, my voice quiet and my heart sick. \u201cI don\u2019t know that, Aoife. I wonder how you seem to think you do.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at me for a long moment, her jaw tightening. \u201cBecause that\u2019s how it always happens,\u201d she said, her voice flat and cold. \u201cWe think we\u2019re safe. We think she\u2019s not coming back. And then all of a sudden, there she is, trying to do something<\/em> to one of them. Trying to hurt our family in any way she can. I don\u2019t know what we ever did to her or what she\u2019s ever wanted, but we\u2019ve had a target painted on our backs for centuries that we can\u2019t seem to wash away. So you\u2019d better believe what you\u2019re hearing because no one is going to talk me out of this. No one is going to stop me. Do you understand that?\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach sank. \u201cYou\u2019re wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can think that,\u201d she said, turning away. \u201cBut I know I\u2019m not. Help me or don\u2019t help me, Marin, but you\u2019re sure as hell not going to stop me.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
