\u201cWhoa, Marin. You look like you\u2019re about to throw up on my shoes.\u201d Cameron blinked, then shook himself. \u201cOh. Oh, that\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s not what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just said you had to leave,\u201d I blurted. \u201cWhat the hell else is that supposed to sound like?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt sure as hell didn\u2019t mean what it sounded like.\u201d His lips thinned. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d He glanced from me toward Thom, J.T., Seamus, and Leinth. \u201cAll I meant is that someone has to go back south on a trading run and I\u2019m volunteering. We\u2019ve left them waiting for us for too damned long with everything that\u2019s been going on. Someone needs to go down there and make sure that they\u2019re still alive and show them that we\u2019re<\/em> still alive. I don\u2019t know if they\u2019ll be worried, but they might be. We\u2019re the only friends they\u2019ve got right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sucked in a breath, my stomach starting to settle. I knuckled my eyes, leaning back into Thom, who wrapped his arm tightly around me. \u201cSo you\u2019re thinking to go down there alone? To do what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTalk,\u201d he said. \u201cTrade? That kind of thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight,\u201d I said slowly, chewing hard on my lower lip.<\/p>\n

Why do I have such a bad feeling about this?<\/em><\/p>\n

Thom\u2019s arm tightened around my shoulders a little more. \u201cYou can\u2019t go alone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not going with me.\u201d Cameron took a deep breath. \u201cAnd honestly, I\u2019d be curious to know who you\u2019d intend to send along with me on this trip if I don\u2019t go alone. I mean\u2014it\u2019s not like anything will come after me if it\u2019s just me, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you really want to take that chance?\u201d Seamus asked, his brow furrowing. \u201cI know I don\u2019t, not with your life. We\u2019ll send someone with you. Maybe someone from the Wild Hunt.\u201d<\/p>\n
