Phelan stared at him for a long moment, his brow furrowing. \u201cUse what? Seamus\u2019s gamble that didn\u2019t pay off?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe might be able to leverage it into paying off,\u201d Gray said, his thoughts starting to race. Family\u2019s important to her\u2014she\u2019s doing this because of her family. There has to be a way to use this.<\/em> \u201cI\u2019m not sure how, but there\u2019s got to be something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m open to suggestions right now,\u201d Phelan said, fidgeting with his book. \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking about it. Everyone knows what she\u2019s planning and none of us like it, but short of physically restraining her, she\u2019s got the right of it\u2014we can\u2019t stop her from doing this if she\u2019s got her mind set on it.\u201d He exhaled slowly. \u201cAnd I\u2019m not comfortable treating my sister like some sort of prisoner, either.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what\u2019s our other option?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked away. \u201cLetting her do it and hopefully fail, but not get herself killed. That might be our only option at this point, Gray. There might not be any other choices left to us. I wish\u2014I wish there were. I truly do.\u201d<\/p>\n

His stomach dropped straight through him to the ground. Gray\u2019s hands curled into fists and he swallowed bile that suddenly crept higher and higher in his throat. \u201cYou can\u2019t be serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any other options. She won\u2019t listen to reason, I won\u2019t lock her up. All I can do at this point is mitigate the damage that happens as best I can.\u201d Phelan started to move past him, his face pale and expression grim.<\/p>\n

Gray\u2019s hand shot out to stop him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a good answer, O\u2019Credne,\u201d Gray said, his voice abruptly hoarse. \u201cCome up with something better.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I could,\u201d Phelan said, then shook off Gray\u2019s hand. \u201cLike I said. I\u2019m open to suggestions.\u201d<\/p>\n

All Gray could do then was stand there and watch him go.<\/p>\n
