They sat in silence for a few long moments. Lara set down her mug with a sigh, leaning back. Cameron watched her, then said, \u201cYou said he\u2019s powerful\u2014well, you at least implied he\u2019s powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did,\u201d she said softly. \u201cAnd he is, if all the tales I\u2019ve ever heard are true and if it really was him that I\u2014\u201d She broke off, blinking and staring at nothing for the space of a few seconds\u2014long enough for Cameron to start worrying.<\/p>\n

\u201cLara?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shook herself, suddenly present again as she met his gaze. \u201cSorry,\u201d she murmured. \u201cI was just…something…\u201d her voice trailed away and she shook her head. \u201cDon\u2019t worry about it. I\u2019m fine.\u201d She took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly, then said, \u201cLeviathan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron nodded. \u201cPowerful, apparently gifted with power over water and ghosts?\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on what they told me, anyway, his talents lie there. Ghosts of the lost or drowned souls of the lakes…<\/em> A shiver crept down his spine at the thought. That was a very, very large number of souls that Leviathan could hope to call.<\/p>\n

Maybe that\u2019s where the legends about the lakes giving up their dead comes from.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cBoth, for better or worse, could be in his wheelhouse, though the dead…that should not be easy for him. Ghosts have minds and wills of their own\u2014they have to be convinced to do something. Very few are mindless and even those that are often aren\u2019t very easily controlled are usually more dangerous to the one trying to wield them as a weapon than to those they\u2019re being arrayed against. No. His power has always been water\u2014usually rivers, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to what I\u2019ve been told, he\u2019s been slumbering in Lake Michigan for the last god-knows-how-long.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lara\u2019s brows knit. \u201cThey\u2019re certain of who it was?\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron nodded. \u201cSeemed to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOdd,\u201d Lara said softly, then reached for her mug again. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel right, but then again, I\u2019m perhaps not as knowledgeable as they are\u2014my personal experience isn\u2019t what theirs is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll take anything you\u2019ve got,\u201d Cameron murmured. \u201cThey\u2019re not infaliable.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one is.<\/em><\/p>\n

Lara stared at him for a long moment before she nodded.<\/p>\n
