\u201cThey\u2019ll need you out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

The hammer rang off-key, striking the anvil instead of the metal on it. Thordin\u2019s shoulders tightened and he stared silently at the glowing metal. He took one breath, then another before asking, \u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething\u2019s coming,\u201d Sif said, not budging from where she stood in the forge\u2019s doorway, staring at him in the dim even as the light from outside threw her face into shadow. \u201cI know you feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stood there in silence, fingers tightening around the haft of the hammer\u2014Matt\u2019s hammer. He stood in Matt\u2019s place, because the younger man wasn\u2019t here, because he was gone, because he\u2019d been taken<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Taken by one of them<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Thordin had felt whoever was out there coming, true enough\u2014and the feel of it shook him down to the very core of his being.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t dared to wonder if it was all of Olympium that had declared war on them or only a few\u2014or if whoever it was came in peace or not. The latter was the distinct possibility and he feared that it would be the whole of that Otherland\u2019s population.<\/p>\n

It always felt like war with them anyway, even when it wasn\u2019t.<\/em> His lips thinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you hiding in here?\u201d she asked. It came as a question, not a demand, which surprised him. Thordin finally looked up, meeting her shadowed gaze.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not hiding,\u201d Thordin murmured, knowing the words were a lie the moment they left his lips. He turned away from her gaze, from her judgement of him, and started to bank the forge fires. \u201cAnd you\u2019re right. I felt it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey need you,\u201d Sif said softly. \u201cThe Dragon isn\u2019t here to help them. If Marin and Neve try to join the line, you can bet I\u2019m going to toss them both over my shoulder and tie them up somewhere so they can\u2019t get hurt. But the others? They\u2019ll need you.\u201d Sif paused for a moment, then added, more softly, \u201cI<\/em> need you.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
