Thom, snap out of it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus stopped dead in his tracks, shifting direction to job toward the sound of J.T.\u2019s voice. The dark-haired healer was on his knees just outside the gates, trying to rouse Thom, who was slumped against his shoulder, eyes closed but the lids fluttering.<\/p>\n<p>Seamus cursed under his breath. He could see the blood starting to drip from Thom\u2019s nose from where he was and his jog turned into a run.<\/p>\n<p><em>Not good. Very not good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He realized it was a stupid question as the words left his lips. Seamus dropped into a crouch on the other side of Thom, sliding his arm underneath the younger man. J.T. shot him a relieved look and started digging around in his pocket with the hand freed up by Seamus\u2019s help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA vision, I think,\u201d J.T. said, jamming a piece of gauze against Thom\u2019s nose. \u201cOne second we were talking, then I look over and he\u2019s not <em>here<\/em> anymore.\u201d He shook his head, expression grim. \u201cWhen I said something had to give eventually, I sure as hell didn\u2019t mean <em>this<\/em>. This happens with Marin. Not usually him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>That answers that.<\/em> Seamus shook his head. \u201cHow long ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly a couple of minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The beat of the drums was close enough that Seamus could feel it deep down. The scouts hadn\u2019t returned.<\/p>\n<p><em>I have a bad feeling about this.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to close the gates,\u201d Seamus said, starting to haul Thom upright. J.T. swore under his breath and quickly moved to help, the gauze still pressed against his friend\u2019s nose and growing more and more red with each passing second. \u201cGet forces up on the walls, be ready. They\u2019re coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t even know who <em>they<\/em> are,\u201d J.T. said, his tone grim. Seamus took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t,\u201d he agreed. \u201cBut when has that ever mattered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Either way, whatever was coming wasn\u2019t friendly and they needed to be prepared for that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s get inside,\u201d Seamus said.<\/p>\n<p>J.T. only nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the two men hauled Thom through the gates, to the relative safety of the walls. Seamus\u2019s heart felt like lead in his chest, beating too sluggishly for comfort.
