\u201cWhere\u2019s Thom?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin turned toward the sound of Jacqueline\u2019s voice, blinking. \u201cWhy aren\u2019t you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSave it,\u201d the healer said. \u201cWhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOut there, talking to them,\u201d Sif said, gesturing beyond the wall. \u201cDoing his job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jacqueline\u2019s gaze scythed across those assembled. Her eyes narrowed. \u201cWho went with him?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dead silence lingered for what felt like too long before Thordin cleared his throat, knowing he was about to regret being the one to speak up. \u201cHe went alone, Jac.\u201d<\/p>\n

The curse that dropped from Jac\u2019s lips was blistering and Thordin winced, surprised that she knew explicatives of that particular caliber. \u201cWhat is wrong<\/em> with you people?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThom is perfectly capable of negotiat\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Olympium.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seamus went silent, staring at her. He blinked once, twice, then asked, \u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCariocecus picked now to wake up. He was trying to warn us they were coming.\u201d Jacqueline\u2019s jaw tightened. \u201cThesan is with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now Seamus swore, looking at Leinth, then looking toward the gates. \u201cI should\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Thordin said. \u201cNo, let me. She\u2019s probably just waiting for the likely opportunity to get her claws into you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sif gave him a stricken look and Thordin took a deep breath, his heart starting to beat a little faster as he stared up at her, hoping she could read what he was thinking in that look.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want to do it, Sif, but someone has to and it can\u2019t be Seamus\u2014one of us has to do it.<\/em><\/p>\n

Her chin dropped in a slow, slight nod.<\/p>\n

Thordin gave her a weak smile and took a deep breath, turning toward Seamus. \u201cOpen the gate and give the order to open fire if something looks like it\u2019s going sideways.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll make sure it\u2019s closed behind you,\u201d Sif said softly as some of the others went to open the gate so Thordin could head out to join Thom in the field.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we tuck tail and run, get it opened up fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will,\u201d she said softly, giving him a long look.<\/p>\n

Be careful<\/em>, it said.<\/p>\n

He gave her a slight nod.<\/p>\n

I will.<\/em><\/p>\n

He walked out into the killing fields beyond the wall, toward the parley a few dozen yards away.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
