\u201cYou waste time, Pluton,\u201d the flag-bearer said. \u201cEither they give us what we have asked for or we do with them what we will. There is no in between here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have warned you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd not acted on your warning.\u201d The flag-bearer glanced toward the woman. \u201cSee what your brother has become? Do you see his weakness?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI see no weakness there,\u201d the woman said, her tone mild, though there was a hidden, razored edge to her voice that sent shivers up and down Thordin\u2019s spine. His fingers tightened on Thom\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n

What the hell are we doing still standing out here, Thom?<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFools,\u201d the flag-bearer snarled. \u201cWe will see who wins this day.\u201d He thrust the flag toward the woman. \u201cTreat with them as you desire. I will not have a hand in it any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n

She fumbled the flag and it fell to the ground with a soft clatter, the white marred by grass and mud. The former flag-bearer spit on it, then turned his mount and rode away, back toward where Thordin presumed the army they negotiated with was waiting for orders, waiting to see what would happen.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re fucked.<\/em><\/p>\n

The leader watched his former flag-bearer go with a blank expression, one that frightened Thordin more than anger would have.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d the leader said softly. \u201cI suppose that answers the question of his loyalty quite succinctly, doesn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you this was dangerous,\u201d the woman said, then glanced toward Thom and Thordin. \u201cYou two would do well to forget what you have just witnessed. Pluton\u2019s request stands, as does his deal. We came for the Hecate and the Ridden Druid.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom took a slow, deep breath. \u201cWe don\u2019t know where they are. I told you that. She came and she took him and we haven\u2019t seen them since.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMm,\u201d the woman said. \u201cUnfortunate.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
