He knew full well the reasons to fear what she could do.<\/p>\n<p><em>But he\u2019s not giving in.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dammit, why hasn\u2019t he backed off yet?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll we want you to do is come home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes narrowed, cold rage and hate bubbling up inside. She didn\u2019t bother to tamp it back down, not yet.<\/p>\n<p><em>I might need it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome home,\u201d she echoed. \u201cAnd where would that be? Really, where would it be? I know where I think home is and I\u2019m pretty sure it\u2019s <em>not<\/em> where you think it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be this way.\u201d He held out his and to her, palm up. Her hands tightened around her weapons and lightning struck close enough to set her hair on end, to leave the smell of ozone thick in the air around them. Pluton barely flinched, though his hand shook for a moment. \u201cCome with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I can be a good little puppet all over again?\u201d Her eyes narrowed and she shook her head slowly. \u201cNo. No, I don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt won\u2019t be that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Damn, but he actually sounded like he might really mean it. She wasn\u2019t about to trust him, though, not after everything that had gone before, everything that he had stood by and watched, maybe even had ordered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow am I supposed to believe that?\u201d she asked in a whisper. \u201cAfter everything that you and yours did to me, how am I supposed to believe a word you say? How do I know you\u2019re telling me the truth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just have to have faith,\u201d Pluton said. He said it straight-faced and that told her everything she needed to know.<\/p>\n<p><em>Luckily, I\u2019m not a child anymore, not like I was then. I know what that look means and what those words mean.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She felt the rage drain away along with her fear, leaving only cold behind. She took one breath, then another, willing her expression to blankness, forcing back the tears that threatened.<\/p>\n<p><em>No fear. This is how it ends, one way or another.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatt, forgive me,\u201d she whispered, then lunged forward. She dropped one of her blades, fingers hooked into claws, reaching, grasping for Pluton\u2019s neck.<\/p>\n<p>Horns sounded in the distance and a roar began to build, though Hecate couldn\u2019t tell if it was her imagination or something else as she cleared the space between them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t kill me,\u201d he roared as her fingers closed around his throat. \u201cI hold power over death!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I am the one who guards the way,\u201d she countered, her voice soft and razor-edged, carrying twin promises of suffering and pain\u2014and release from the same. \u201cRemember who I was before you stole it from me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She called the lightning as his brother had once taught her and all around them, the storm erupted in all its fury.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Hecate&#8217;s point of view.] \u201cPlease, Hecate,\u201d Pluton said, staring her in the face without a hint of panic to his voice, though she could see it starting to take root in his eyes.
