\u201cSomething or someone<\/em>?\u201d he asked, forcing his voice to remain steady. His mind reeled, shuffling through the possibilities rapidly. It was too much to hope for that it had been Pluton and his ilk, which would have meant the threat, though real two days ago, was ended now. Once he would have wondered if it was Hecate\u2019s doing, but he was confident that it wouldn\u2019t be her, not now\u2014perhaps it never would or could have been.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not even sure of that.\u201d Marin bit her lip, her fingers tightening around her mug. \u201cHe had a feeling, so we went. He was up at the forge this morning.\u201d She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as if to steady herself before she continued. \u201cSomething was digging in the dirt, with bare hands and claws and probably shovels, but it doesn\u2019t look like they stuck around for very long either way. They didn\u2019t get too deep, but it was like they were trying to undermine the wardings somehow.\u201d<\/p>\n

A shudder racked him.<\/p>\n

Not good. Not good at all.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt could be anything,\u201d he murmured. \u201cAnyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just what we need, right?<\/em><\/p>\n

He closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll have a look,\u201d he rasped after a moment, feeling sick to his stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlone?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf it comes to that,\u201d he said, shaking his head. \u201cI doubt it will. I\u2019ll take Thordin or Seamus. Someone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hopefully one of them will have more insight.<\/em><\/p>\n

Why didn\u2019t I sense anything?<\/em><\/p>\n

He sat down heavily next to Marin, chewing on his lower lip, the mug of tea he\u2019d started brewing for himself sitting abandoned on the stones around the fire. She leaned against him and he shivered despite the warmth of the fire, reaching to wrap his arm around her tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think it is?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMatt said the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan closed his eyes again. \u201cWell, he\u2019s right. We\u2019ll figure it out. And then we\u2019ll figure out how to stop whoever or whatever it is. Once I get out there, I might be able to sense something familiar if it\u2019s someone I\u2019ve gone toe-to-toe with before\u2014and if I drag Seamus along, he might be able to do the same thing. We\u2019ll just have to see. I\u2019ll go out there later, when the mist burns off.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat would they want our dead for, Phelan?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head. \u201cI don\u2019t want to think about it, leann\u00e1n<\/em>, and neither do you. It doesn\u2019t matter, anyway. They won\u2019t get them. Whatever they\u2019re planning won\u2019t come to anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

She set aside her mug and hugged her knees to her chest. Phelan\u2019s lips thinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI promise,\u201d he added, his stomach twisting.<\/p>\n

She looked up at him. \u201cDon\u2019t make promises you can\u2019t keep, Phelan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI try not to.\u201d<\/p>\n
