Even though the mirth was short-lived, it was good to hear, like a balm on his soul. Cameron reached up to pat her hand, shaking his head slightly. \u201cI was only half kidding, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, I\u2019m well aware.\u201d Lara smiled before she withdrew her hand, tucking it back into the pocket of her jeans. \u201cThough I do hope more positive ones notice you rather than the alternative.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be a change,\u201d Cameron said, then blew out a quiet breath. \u201cThat would definitely be a change.\u201d He looked at her for a long moment. \u201cAnything you want me to tell them? Anything you need from us next time I come?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that means you\u2019ll be coming back, I take it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron choked on a laugh. \u201cAs long as they let me. If it\u2019s not me, it\u2019ll be someone else\u2014I don\u2019t know who.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019ll probably be me. I\u2019m not sure if anyone else is as comfortable on horseback short of Phelan, Thordin, or Seamus, and it strikes me that they\u2019ll stick a bit closer to home\u2014just a hunch, but I feel like it\u2019s a good one.<\/em><\/p>\n

One corner of her mouth curved upward in a smirk. \u201cYou assume we want you to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want to cut off contact, I\u2019m sure we\u2019d respect it, though we both know how hard that might end up being. We\u2019re in pretty close proximity to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lara nudged him, shaking her head. \u201cI\u2019m just teasing you, but you already knew that. We\u2019ll take anything you\u2019re willing to part with\u2014food would be best, but I can understand how that might end up being dear. If something hits us here, we may come to you if you\u2019ll have us, just the same as we\u2019d take any of your people who might want to leave.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI doubt anything else will come after you,\u201d Cameron said.<\/p>\n

\u201cKey words being anything else,\u201d Lara said, then sighed. \u201cI don\u2019t know, Cameron. There\u2019s not many of us and we\u2019re not very fortified. We survive by being small and staying unnoticed. I don\u2019t know how long that will last.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, hopefully we\u2019ll be distracting enough to keep you and your people safe,\u201d he said, reaching over to squeeze her shoulder. \u201cI\u2019ll pass along the message. Who knows, maybe we can arrange it so the Hunt checks in on you on their way through.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be strange,\u201d Lara said, \u201cthough I don\u2019t think it would be bad. Thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d Cameron murmured, then smiled a little. \u201cAnything for friends, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
