I went to the fire to wait and Rory returned to his watch post up on the wall with a few members of the Wild Hunt, alert for any trouble that may have trailed Cameron home. What that trouble might have been, though\u2014that was still an unknown, would be an unknown until Cameron came to the fire and spilled his guts.<\/p>\n

There was no doubt in my mind that he would, too.<\/p>\n

It was actually more like twenty minutes before Cameron appeared, still seeming shaken but a little less than he had been before. He sat down next to me by the fire and said nothing for a few long minutes. I let him have his silence, instead unwrapping the carrying sling that held my newborn against my chest. Cameron watched me, his lips pressed tightly together.<\/p>\n

Finally, he exhaled quietly and spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cLeviathan waylaid me on the road. He gave me a message to pass along\u2014a message and a warning.\u201d He hesitated, then asked, \u201cIs she here?\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped. \u201cIs who here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHecate,\u201d Cameron said. \u201cIs she here, Marin? Was he right?\u201d<\/p>\n

How the hell does he know that?<\/em><\/p>\n

Something told me neither my brother nor his wife would be very happy to hear that <\/em>particular bit of news.<\/p>\n

I nodded slowly. He cursed under his breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat changed? She\u2014I thought\u2014I thought she wanted us all dead or worse. Her creatures almost killed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s complicated,\u201d I murmured. \u201cBut at her core, I don\u2019t think she\u2019s a bad person. She just had the shit kicked out of her one too many times and snapped.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy Phelan and Teague and Seamus?\u201d All of the blood had drained from Cameron\u2019s face; he was ashen, almost waxy. I swore under my breath.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no,\u201d I said, heart hammering. \u201cNo, they were just some of the people she got aimed at. No, Cam. Shit happened to her and it broke her mentally and she\u2019s been searching for centuries for something to make her whole again. She thought Phelan and the rest were a means to that end. They weren\u2019t, not really, but she was jacked up enough to fool herself into thinking they were.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head, mute for a moment. His hands tightened into fists.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer creatures almost killed me,\u201d he murmured. \u201cThey attacked Neve and I on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

He stared at me for a long moment. \u201cLeviathan still wants her to fight at his side. He said not to get in his way. She knows what he wants.\u201d He swallowed hard and looked toward the fire. \u201cI think we\u2019re really screwed this time, Marin.
