Hecate took a slow, deep breath, trying to steady herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand,\u201d Marin said, and the words crashed down on Hecate like waves over breakers. A shudder racked her and a raw, bitter laugh was ripped from her throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you?\u201d She asked, regretting the question as soon as it had passed her lips. Marin just smiled weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to, at least,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><em>You can\u2019t ask more than that, can you? Especially now that you\u2019ve denied that she can truly understand\u2014how do you know that she couldn\u2019t?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Because no one murdered her family in front of her. She didn\u2019t spend hours kneeling in their blood only to be taken from the only home she\u2019d ever known, still soaked in the lifesblood of her kin. She wasn\u2019t forced into a marriage she didn\u2019t want to a man who delighted in tormenting her.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Stop. Stop. Stop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hecate took another breath. <em>Steady. Focus.<\/em> \u201cHow long do we have before Leviathan comes for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComes for us,\u201d Matt corrected softly. Hecate bit her lip. \u201cYou\u2019re not facing this alone,\u201d he reminded her gently. \u201cI promised you that much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, but your family\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family will understand.\u201d He looked to his sister, who nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s right,\u201d Marin said. \u201cThough I\u2019ll admit that my hope is that it won\u2019t come to that. I was hoping you two had a plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hecate blinked. \u201cA plan? A plan for <em>what<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew that he wanted you, that he was going to come for you,\u201d Marin said. \u201cI was hoping you\u2019d come up with a plan to outsmart him, something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her stomach crashed through the floor and she knew the color had drained from her face again. She felt sick, light-headed and queasy.<\/p>\n<p>How was she going to tell Marin that there was no plan beyond giving in to the bastard?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did,\u201d Matt said, the words shaking her to her core. \u201cBut god only knows if we\u2019ll be able to pull it off, especially now.\u201d He let go of her and leaned forward, elbows against his knees. \u201cBut maybe we\u2019ll be able to pull it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure as hell open to suggestions,\u201d Marin said, shifting her sleeping infant from one arm to the other. \u201cWhat do you have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt smiled. \u201cWe set a trap for the bastard and beat him at his own game.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Hecate&#8217;s point of view.] Marin\u2019s fingers tightened slightly before the other woman let go.
