Seamus moved down the wall with him, never more than a dozen feet away, a sentinel watching, guarding. Thom tried to ignore it at first after their brief exchange, but the words gnawed at him.<\/p>\n

Something isn\u2019t right.<\/em><\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t a fight we can win with defenses or strength of arms.<\/em><\/p>\n

His jaw tightened. He was still a dozen yards down from the gate when he turned away from it, toward Seamus. \u201cWhat aren\u2019t you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJameson wanted to be the one to tell you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJ.T.\u2019s not here. You are. What the hell is going on, Seamus?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething happened at the barrow,\u201d Seamus said. \u201cSomething was digging there, trying to undermine the wards. Phelan and Matt found it, then Phelan sorted it out. They told me because they thought I might have some insight so I went out to take a look myself. They came close to their purpose there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cold shot through Thom. \u201cTheir purpose,\u201d he echoed, his voice dull. \u201cWhat was that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want our dead,\u201d Seamus said. \u201cIt\u2019s likely they only pulled back because they could sense what was happening on that field when Hecate went up against Pluton. That would scare the bold out of anyone.\u201d His lips thinned. \u201cWe both know she doesn\u2019t have another fight like that in her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDo we?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do,\u201d Seamus said. \u201cThat was personal, what she did out there. I know what that looks like. Hell, I\u2019d like to have the opportunity to do it to my father-in-law, for what he did to my daughter, me, Leinth. He\u2019d have done it to Leinth\u2019s child, too, if he\u2019d ever known of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom winced, saying nothing. He stared at the wall for a long moment before his gaze shifted back to Seamus. \u201cWhat was out there?\u201d<\/p>\n
