She shifted the infant in her arms, holding him a little closer, a little tighter, staring at Marin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d she asked, knowing it was a bad question, knowing that she shouldn\u2019t ask it but still unable to stop it from passing her lips.<\/p>\n<p>Marin exhaled and shook her head. \u201cBecause I\u2019ve seen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Of course. Her gift. What kind of idiot am I?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A big, utterly useless one if the voices in her head were to be believed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Remember, you don\u2019t have to listen to them.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If only it was as easy as remembering that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry. I shouldn\u2019t have asked,\u201d Hecate said softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all right,\u201d Marin said. She smiled weakly as she looked up again. \u201cIt\u2019s not like you\u2019ve been here to talk about it and honestly, I don\u2019t think that it\u2019s something my brother would have talked at great length about anyway. Don\u2019t sweat it. I\u2019m not going to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hecate took a deep, shuddering breath, then nodded. \u201cBy all the powers that are and ever were, it must be some hell of a burden to carry, seeing the future even in glimpses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, it\u2019s not always fun,\u201d Marin admitted. \u201cBut sometimes it\u2019s useful. I just have to look at it that way and take the bad with the good. It\u2019s not like I have a choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think we passed it on to him, though,\u201d Marin said, staring at the baby in Hecate\u2019s arms. \u201cNot the way Thom and I have it. That\u2019s a blessing, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth of you have the gift of foresight?\u201d It pained her to call it a gift. The memories of others she\u2019d known who had the same talent made her feel they were more a curse than any sort of gift.<\/p>\n<p><em>For both of them to carry that burden, to see what may lie ahead&#8230;what hell that must be.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Another shiver wracked her. Baby Merlin made a quiet sound, one tiny fist free of his saddle and waving at her. Hecate couldn\u2019t help but smile despite her darkening mood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll take care of him even when you can\u2019t, Marin,\u201d she said. \u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI may hold you to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hecate smiled. \u201cI hope you do. Not because I want to lose you, but\u2026but because I hope you trust me enough to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marin reached over to squeeze her arm. \u201cI already do,\u201d she said softly. \u201cYou\u2019re my sister now\u2014you\u2019re family.
