Now what were you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mean when you weren\u2019t listening?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One corner of his mouth lifted in a rueful smile. \u201cYes, then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing all that important,\u201d she said, then shook her head, giving him one last squeeze before she let go and started to stand up. \u201cI\u2019m going to go back. You coming?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head. \u201cI\u2019ll stay out here a little longer. You\u2019re going to go check on Neve, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline nodded. \u201cShe\u2019s probably getting closer than any of us realize. I don\u2019t think she was paying attention to when things might have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phelan chuckled softly. \u201cProbably not.\u201d <em>There was a lot going on then.<\/em> \u201cGo on. I\u2019ll catch up later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou going to be okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlways,\u201d Phelan said, though they both knew it was probably a lie.<\/p>\n<p>Jacqueline leaned down and pressed a kiss to his temple before she turned and walked away. Phelan looked out over the ravine again. His fingers sank into the grass as he sat there in front of the hedges. The wards were weaker now, weaker than he remembered them being.<\/p>\n<p><em>Marin hasn&#8217;t been out here to tend them for a few days. Probably what it is.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The fact that they relied so heavily on her to take care of the wards should have worried him more than it did, especially in light of what he knew, of what she\u2019d told him in the past.<\/p>\n<p><em>We need to change that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Footsteps approached from behind and Phelan opened his eyes, exhaling quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it, Thordin?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The footsteps stopped. \u201cHow did you know it was me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re still limping,\u201d Phelan said, turning. \u201cWhere\u2019s Sif? I thought she was still attached to you at the hip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thordin shrugged slightly and sank down into the grass next to him. \u201cI told her I was going up to the forge.
