Matt shifted the metal in it again, avoiding looking at anything else.<\/p>\n<p><em>At least one of them doesn\u2019t think I\u2019m crazy.<\/em> He risked a glance toward Phelan, who seemed thoughtful as he dusted a rag along the edges of a blade waiting for sharpening. <em>Okay, maybe both of them don\u2019t think I\u2019m crazy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, I wish he\u2019d said something,\u201d Phelan said. \u201cMight have eased a lot of heartache on both sides.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt winced. \u201cThat\u2019s a ship that sailed a long time ago.\u201d He looked at the metal he\u2019d set to heat and turned it again. \u201cHonestly, I\u2019m not sure what good it really would have done. I don\u2019t know that it would have changed much. There was a lot of shit going on and somehow, I feel like you guys knowing what they were going through would have just made it worse. There were enough problems already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll never know,\u201d Phelan said, though his tone of voice was enough to tell Matt that it was going to bother him for at least a little while. Matt closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s his problem, not mine\u2014not right now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you worried about her?\u201d Matt asked as he finally brought the metal out of the forge, laying it across the anvil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, less about her physical safety since my sister\u2019s well away from here,\u201d Phelan said, then smiled weakly. \u201cSending her and Gray back east before that battle was the smartest move we\u2019ve made yet, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know about the smartest, but it sure as hell was a good move,\u201d Thordin muttered, abandoning the bellows for a moment and watching as Matt began shaping the steel on the anvil. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize how much your sister could <em>hate<\/em>, Phelan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A shiver shot through Matt and he set his jaw. <em>Thank goodness for small favors.<\/em> \u201cThe worst part of it is that Hecate would say that she deserved all the hate your sister wanted to throw at her and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSounded to me like she doesn\u2019t,\u201d Phelan said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Matt sighed and shrugged, the hammer starting to fall in easy rhythm again. \u201cYou try to tell her that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Matt&#8217;s point of view.] \u201cI understand,\u201d Thordin said, then shrugged, leaning forward to peer at the mouth of the firebox.
