A chill shot through me. \u201cWhy? I thought she was their prisoner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more complicated than that,\u201d Matt murmured, closing his eyes and leaning against the forge\u2019s doorframe. \u201cYou heard her talk about it, about what they did.\u201d<\/p>\n

I winced as Thom stiffened slightly. \u201cWhen was this?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been more than once,\u201d I told him, my voice firm. \u201cShe\u2019s my sister and I have every intention of treating her like my sister. Is that a problem?\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of the tension drained away and Thom looked down. \u201cNo,\u201d he said, though there was an undercurrent of nerves and disagreement\u2014and something else, something that might have been fear\u2014that I was able to detect. From the looks on their faces, Matt, J.T., and Phelan had caught it, too. Thom shifted uncomfortably, as if suddenly feeling the weight of our gazes\u2014and our judgement.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s my wife, Thom,\u201d Matt said softly. \u201cShe\u2019s my wife and I love her and deciding to stay would be easier if everyone could put aside the past and the bullshit and let her at least try to start over here with us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin reached over and squeezed Matt\u2019s shoulder. He looked away, out toward the ravine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to abandon you guys,\u201d Matt murmured. \u201cBut for her sake, I will if I have to.\u201d<\/p>\n

There it was, the line in the sand. I looked up at Thom, who had an expression like he\u2019d just been gut-punched.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t say it if you won\u2019t mean it, Thom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom shook his head. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Matt. It\u2019s just going to take some getting used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWork harder at it,\u201d I told him, then shifted my attention back to Phelan. \u201cYou were saying?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan nodded slowly. \u201cI was. Pluton had a strange trust of Hecate when it came to Persephone\u2014at least, that\u2019s what I was always led to believe. One usually escorted the other if he wasn\u2019t anywhere to be found and I know I heard at least one tale of Hecate helping her escape, at least for a little while. I don\u2019t know how much truth there was to that one, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

I glanced at Matt, biting my lip. \u201cI\u2019m not sure right now is the time to ask her about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d he asked, a thread of worry underlying his voice. \u201cIs she okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I was coming for J.T.,\u201d I admitted. \u201cShe said she is, but I think there\u2019s more going on than she wanted to tell me. I just\u2014it seemed like a good idea to have you take a look.\u201d<\/p>\n

J.T. took two slow, deep breaths before he nodded. \u201cOkay. Okay. That I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n
