\u201cHell,\u201d Rory said, shaking his head. \u201cWe can\u2019t go two damn weeks without someone new gunning for us, can we? Turning into one of those damn monster of the week shows.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a little less monster-of-the-week and a little more someone called in backup, if I\u2019m reading this right,\u201d Phelan said, his expression grim. He stepped around Marin and Hecate to reach for Thordin\u2019s shoulder. \u201cHow much time do we have?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s leading the storm front,\u201d Thordin said. His stomach twisted in on itself and he tasted bile at the back of his throat. \u201cI couldn\u2019t see what else he was bringing with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Menhit\u2019s with him, the camazotzi<\/em>,\u201d Marin said grimly. She glanced back toward Tala and Neve. \u201cYou two better get under cover with the twins.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tala nodded slightly, reaching down with one hand to help Neve to her feet, her son nestled in one arm as Neve cradled little Gwen. \u201cDo you know where Angie is?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably already on her way there,\u201d Marin said. She crouched to take Lin from Hecate.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you coming with us?\u201d Neve asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll need me on the wall,\u201d Marin said.<\/p>\n

J.T. cleared his throat. \u201cMar\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d she said. Thordin\u2019s stomach dropped. He\u2019d heard that tone before and the look on Phelan\u2019s face\u2014and J.T.\u2019s, for that matter\u2014told them that all three of them knew she wasn\u2019t going to budge on this. \u201cI know where I\u2019m needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about Lin?\u201d Hecate asked as she slowly climbed to her feet, swaying slightly. Thordin\u2019s lips thinned. The witch-goddess was pale. Under ordinary circumstances, while he might not entirely trust her, her magic could have been useful up on the wall.<\/p>\n

Except she\u2019s not going to be up to slinging magic anytime soon. I didn\u2019t realize how much that fight took from her until now.<\/em><\/p>\n

Marin took a step forward and hugged Hecate gently, mindful of the newborn cradled in one arm. \u201cYou and I talked about you taking care of him when I can\u2019t. This is one of those moments. Go with Tala and Neve. I\u2019ll bring Lin. I know that I can trust the three of you to take good care of him until we\u2019ve dealt with the threat that\u2019s coming to knock on our gates.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2014are you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure,\u201d Marin said.<\/p>\n

Thordin\u2019s throat tightened and he stood mute as Marin gently turned Hecate and started to lead her after Neve and Tala. \u201cThat\u2019s a thing I never thought I\u2019d ever live to see,\u201d he murmured to Phelan and J.T., shaking his head slightly.<\/p>\n

Phelan snorted. \u201cWell, that describes a lot of things these days. Let\u2019s get back to the wall. I\u2019m sure Thom, Matt, and the rest will be joining us shortly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll go round them up,\u201d J.T. said. His gaze was also on Marin and Hecate\u2019s retreating backs, his voice caught somewhere between thoughtful and concerned. Phelan reached over to squeeze his shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll be fine,\u201d he said, his voice firm.<\/p>\n

Thordin glanced toward his friend, frowning. He wasn\u2019t sure where Phelan got his certainty, but sometimes he wished that he\u2019d share.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go,\u201d Rory said, already walking away from the fire.<\/p>\n

Thordin exhaled, squeezing his hands into fists, then turned to follow, Phelan falling in a step behind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
