Every limb ached and his throat felt raw, as if the fight had him feeling every decade, every century he\u2019d lived. Perhaps he really <em>was<\/em> getting too old for all the bullshit.<\/p>\n<p>A few seconds after his boots hit the mud beneath the wall, Marin, Phelan, and Matt were beside him. He leaned against the stones, scrubbing a hand over his face before he regarded Marin with a long and solemn look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never knew that she became an issue,\u201d he said slowly, watching Marin\u2019s eyes, catching the barest flicker of something that passed through them and then was gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was long after you were gone,\u201d she murmured, scrubbing a hand over her face. \u201cThere was nothing for you to do about it anyway. It was something for us to handle and we handled it. <em>She<\/em> handled it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus nearly flinched, barely managing to suppress it. A hand slid into his and he startled slightly, blinking blearily at Leinth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re clear on the back side?\u201d he asked, feeling half dazed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClear on the back side,\u201d she confirmed, then glanced toward the others. \u201cWe should get out of this rain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll need some help in a minute,\u201d J.T. called from above. \u201cPaul and I can\u2019t get him down on our own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All the blood drained from Marin\u2019s face and her gaze snapped toward J.T., still in the watchtower above. \u201cWhat\u2014is it bad, Jay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad enough,\u201d J.T. said. \u201cI\u2019ll need to get him on a course of antibiotics fast. The wounds\u2014there\u2019s something strange about them and I\u2019ve got a bad feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll help,\u201d Seamus said. He squeezed Leinth\u2019s hand and then let go.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d Leinth asked, following Marin\u2019s gaze as she let Seamus move away from her side and toward the ladder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <em>camazotzi<\/em>,\u201d Seamus said. \u201cThat and Thordin guiding the storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He mounted the ladder, Matt on his heels.
