\u201cCome,\u201d Leinth said softly, staring at the watchtower. \u201cWe should see to the damage done to the defenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next to him, Phelan felt Marin stiffen, then relax.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d she murmured, then took a deep breath. \u201cYou said nothing hit us from the back side?\u201d<\/p>\n

A chill shot through him. She was calmer, more focused than he expected, especially considering what J.T. had just said about Thom. Phelan glanced up toward the watchtower again even as Marin tore her gaze from it, looking at Leinth.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing,\u201d Leinth said. \u201cThey focused on frontal assault, it seems. Either they don\u2019t realize that we\u2019re more vulnerable on that side without the walls, or\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOr a dozen other things,\u201d Marin said grimly. \u201cOr they don\u2019t realize that there\u2019s no wall there or the assault on the front side was a distraction for something else or the wards are stronger than we think they are\u2014or something about the ravine and the creek halts their advance. It could be anything, but whatever it is, we\u2019ll have to worry about it later.\u201d She exhaled, glancing up toward the sky as another rumble of thunder shook the three down to the marrow of their bones. \u201cHopefully this storm won\u2019t do any more damage to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe I should try to go talk to him,\u201d Phelan muttered, eyeing the clouds. He had no doubt that Thordin was still holding onto the storm, though he suspected his friend might not realize what he was doing\u2014what his emotions were doing. \u201cIf Thordin settles down\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLeave him be,\u201d Marin said. Her jaw tightened and she met Phelan\u2019s surprised look with a steely stare of her own. \u201cAt least until this gets really dangerous for us and not just for the enemy.\u201d She rubbed at her temple and sighed, gesturing for Leinth to lead on. \u201cCome on. I need something to distract me for a little while until J.T.\u2019s at least gotten started with Thom. He doesn\u2019t need me underfoot right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The statement was true enough and Phelan knew it\u2014and he also knew it was killing Marin not to know what was going on with her husband, with the father of her child. \u201cDo you want me to\u2014?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shook her head quickly. \u201cNo. Stay with us. I need you here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leinth watched them with a slightly arched brow, curiosity gleaming in her eyes. \u201cI\u2019ll take that to mean that things went a bit less well than we\u2019d hoped but probably better than we might have expected. Was Thomas the only casualty?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Sif,\u201d Phelan said, swallowing. \u201cNo one else seems to have been seriously hurt, but I suppose we\u2019ll know more in a little while, once we\u2019ve got a full picture of what the hell just happened here.\u201d<\/p>\n
