Phelan took a deep breath, glancing toward the wall. \u201cWhen she was attacking you\u2014did it feel like she was attacking the wardings on the wall, too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat and more,\u201d Marin admitted, following his gaze. \u201cYou\u2019re going to say we need to check it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmart girl,\u201d Phelan murmured, already starting to walk. Marin trailed behind, not letting go of his hand. Leinth\u2019s brow arched, but she followed, crossing her arms beneath the cloak she wore over her jeans and tee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat precisely happened?\u201d Leinth asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn attack,\u201d Marin said, glancing back over her shoulder. \u201cAn old enemy deciding that her opportunity had finally come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m worried, Marin,\u201d Phelan said as they came to the wall. He shifted his staff to the crook of his arm, reaching for the rain-slick concrete and stone. \u201cI\u2019m worried that she\u2019s working with Menhit or worse, Menhit\u2019s working with her. I\u2019m worried that they <em>camazotzi<\/em> were answering <em>her<\/em> beckon call, not Menhit\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing we can do about that right now,\u201d Marin said as she drew up alongside him. She squeezed his hand. \u201cWe\u2019ll figure it out later, just like everything else.\u201d She pressed her hand against the wall and closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. Phelan watched her for a few seconds, then touched the wall himself.<\/p>\n<p>A faint tremor of power worked its way up his arm, sent a shiver skittering down his spine. He breathed a sigh of relief. They were weakened, but they were still undeniably there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe damaged them,\u201d Marin murmured, \u201cbut not as badly as she could have, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we repair them as soon as we can,\u201d Leinth said from behind them. \u201cBut you let another set of hands help with that, Marin Ambrose. You\u2019ve given more than enough in defense of this place, especially so soon after you had that baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m fine, Leinth,\u201d Marin said, pulling her hand away from the wall and turning toward the other woman. \u201cReally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know bullshit when I hear it,\u201d Leinth said, though she smiled. \u201cI\u2019ve spouted it often enough myself.
