I brought him a mug and he took it with a grateful smile. He spoke as I turned back to pour my own.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow extensive was the damage? Injuries?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDamage isn\u2019t too bad, though we\u2019ll have to do some work on the wards. Thom\u2019s hurt, too, but he and Sif are the worst. Everyone else has more minor injuries\u2014or isn\u2019t reacting to getting smacked around by a camazotzi<\/em> the same way he is.\u201d Cradling my mug in one hand, I returned to my spot next to the fire. \u201cNeve\u2019s in labor. It started after the fighting ended, thank god. I don\u2019t know what we would have done if it had happened during that fight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHell,\u201d Thordin breathed. \u201cNo one told me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head. \u201cHecate was with her practically in seconds after it started\u2014Neve asked for her\u2014and J.T. was there as soon as he was done with Thom. It\u2019s been going on for hours, now.\u201d It wasn\u2019t like mine had been, or even Tala\u2019s\u2014though Tala still hadn\u2019t quite told any of us how long she\u2019d been in labor before she knew it was time. I leaned back against the log sitting behind me, one that was starting to be worn smooth by touch in the months since the end of everything we\u2019d known before. We were only weeks away from the anniversary of that day.<\/p>\n

A lot had changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHecate,\u201d Thordin echoed, sounding thoughtful. He took a sip of his coffee, then another, gaze flicking away from the flames to meet my eyes. \u201cWhat do you think on her, Marin? Do you trust her?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded without hesitation. \u201cWith my life, with my son\u2019s and my brother\u2019s lives. I trust her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thordin nodded. \u201cI do, too,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cShe seems\u2014I don\u2019t know. Different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is.\u201d I took a slow sip of coffee. \u201cAnd she\u2019s not. It\u2019s always been there, it\u2019s just that she hasn\u2019t dared to let anyone see it in her in almost forever. It hasn\u2019t been safe. Now it is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope it stays that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
