For her part, she\u2019d slept after it was all over, after feeding and cuddling their newborn twins, but she wasn\u2019t sure if he had. \u201cYou knew they would be,\u201d she murmured, her voice still a little hoarse from the strain of the previous day. Cameron glanced up to meet her eye, flushing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did, but it\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s different, somehow. It\u2019s not quite what I expected it to be like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt never is,\u201d she admitted, then smiled again. Artorius was nestled against her breast, still fast asleep, though he\u2019d wake soon enough. His sister had already eaten her fill. Her younger twin would wake soon enough to do the same. \u201cIt\u2019s different when it\u2019s yours. That\u2019s what I\u2019ve heard time and again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess they\u2019re right.\u201d Cameron\u2019s gaze drifted back to the dark-haired bundle in his arms. Both had inherited her dark hair, though Anne had her father\u2019s eyes. Cameron was already besotted; she could tell that much.<\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s the way it should be, really.<\/em> \u201cThey\u2019ll grow up before you know it,\u201d she said softly. \u201cThink about how quickly Lin\u2019s been growing, and he\u2019s not much older at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few weeks,\u201d Cameron murmured, drifting over to sit down on the edge of the bed. He shifted Anne to one arm, then reached for Neve\u2019s hand. \u201cThis is our family, Neve,\u201d he breathed. \u201cThis is us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded, squeezing his fingers before she reached up to ruffle his hair. \u201cIt\u2019s the family that came from the two of us, but there\u2019s more to our family than just what\u2019s right here, isn\u2019t there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell\u2014I mean\u2014of course there is.\u201d Cameron blushed looking away for a moment. \u201cBut this\u2014you and me and these two babies, this is <em>us<\/em>. It\u2019s\u2014it\u2019s the core of our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neve rested her hand against his cheek and smiled weakly. \u201cIt\u2019s what you\u2019ll fight for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hardest,\u201d Cameron admitted, looking back at her. \u201cAnd it\u2019s what I\u2019ll always come home for.
