Neve was quiet for a few long moments, staring down at Artorius. I wish I had trusted her sooner. I wish\u2014I wish things hadn\u2019t gone so horribly wrong for her.<\/em><\/p>\n

I wish so many things. So, so many things\u2014too many, really.<\/em><\/p>\n

If only they could come true.<\/em><\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t the way things worked, though.<\/p>\n

\u201cNeve?\u201d<\/p>\n

She glanced up toward Cameron and smiled, though her smile shrank slightly at the concern on his face. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was about to ask you the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reached up and stroked his cheek. \u201cI\u2019m fine. I was just thinking, that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThings that can\u2019t be changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron stared at her for a moment, then smiled weakly and shook his head. \u201cI love you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love you, too.\u201d Her thumb brushed against his cheek before she moved her hand. \u201cYou need to get some sleep, y\u2019know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSoon,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cReally.\u201d Neve grinned. \u201cI don\u2019t believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll drop of my own accord soon enough,\u201d Cameron admitted, shifting so he was seated next to her on the bed, leaning back against the pillows with her. \u201cI promise. You\u2019ll look over and I\u2019ll be snoring.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPromise?\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled and leaned into kiss her on the cheek. \u201cPromise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m still not sure I believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cameron smiled crookedly, edging closer. Neve sighed, resting her head against his as he rested his head against her shoulder.<\/p>\n

This. This is how it should be\u2014how it always should have been.<\/em><\/p>\n

She pressed a kiss to his temple. His eyes were already closed.<\/p>\n

Saying she didn\u2019t believe him had been a lie, after all.<\/p>\n

\u201cSweet dreams, Cam,\u201d she whispered, gently rubbing her son\u2019s back as she gazed at Cameron. \u201cI\u2019ll be right here when you wake up. All of us will be. I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
