The sound of Matt\u2019s hammer against metal echoed softly down the hill as Phelan trudged up toward the forge. His thoughts were a maelstrom and he was still kicking himself\u2014hard\u2014for being so blunt and so straightforward with Kellin about what he\u2019d sensed, about what he\u2019d come to realize.<\/p>\n

He\u2019d been too<\/em> blunt and too<\/em> straightforward and now he wasn\u2019t sure if he\u2019d upset some sort of delicate equilibrium she\u2019d crafted for herself.<\/p>\n

No, that\u2019s a lie. I know I\u2019ve upset the equilibrium and that was a dangerous proposition. I should have had more tact, been more careful.<\/em><\/p>\n

It had just been so damned startling<\/em> and she\u2019d been the one to ask, after all.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m a bleeding idiot sometimes. Maybe I really <\/em>am cracked. Maybe something really did go south somewhere along the line and I just haven\u2019t realized that it did or what it was yet.<\/em><\/p>\n

Matt was alone in the forge when Phelan ducked inside and barely glanced up when he did. Phelan slipped past him to take over the bellows, peering at the piece on the anvil.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore swords?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t feel like casting arrowheads,\u201d Matt said, watching as Phelan pumped the bellows, forcing more air into the embers. He gestured slightly and Phelan stopped, letting Matt thrust the piece back into the coals to heat again for more shaping to come. \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m all right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt just stared at him in the dim of the forge, eyes narrowing slightly. Phelan managed a sheepish smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all over my face, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking only a few of us would be able to read it and recognize it for what it is,\u201d Matt said, glancing to the embers again and the half-formed sword heating in them. \u201cWhat\u2019s eating at you this time?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI told Kellin something.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
