\u201cThen that\u2019s something we need to fix, and fast.\u201d Matt shook his head, watching the blade in the forge. \u201cWill talking it out help?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen has it ever?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt snorted and shifted the blade around among the embers. \u201cDon\u2019t get like that, Phelan. Just because you\u2019ve got some kind of existential dread about Atlantis doesn\u2019t mean that you\u2019re not going to have answers and doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s something that we shouldn\u2019t<\/em> talk about. Let\u2019s be honest here\u2014there was<\/em> some good that came out of Atlantis back then, wasn\u2019t there?\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan flinched, staring at his hands. Matt was right, of course, but admitting it almost made him ill at ease. \u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d he grated, still staring at his hands. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t make it any easier, considering the hell we all went through because of it\u2014you included.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt grimaced and pulled the blade out of the heat again, starting to hammer once more. He didn\u2019t bother to look at Phelan. \u201cThat\u2019s a long time ago and far away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe tightness in your voice says otherwise.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged, intent on his work. \u201cIt\u2019s further than other things.\u201d He glanced sidelong at Phelan, his brow furrowing slightly. \u201cDon\u2019t let this eat you alive, Phelan,\u201d he murmured. \u201cIt\u2019s not worth it. There\u2019s too much at stake for you to just let that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phelan shook his head hard and exhaled a sigh, leaning back against the wall of the forge. The brick was cool against his back and he tilted his head to stare at the ceiling. \u201cYou\u2019re right,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re absolutely right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut fucking Atlantis,\u201d Phelan said, then smiled crookedly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, in that past life, he suspected it never really died.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe might have been right,\u201d Phelan murmured, staring at something neither of them could actually see. \u201cMaybe he was right.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
