Thom stared at me silently for a few seconds, his thumb stroking my cheek. \u201cI had a dream last night,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

That sent a chill down my spine. \u201cWhat kind of dream?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe kind that scares the crap out of me,\u201d he murmured, closing his eyes and leaning back. I bit my lip, working my shoes off and stretching out next to him, gently wrapping my arms around him as he rested his cheek against my head. \u201cThe kind that we write down but don\u2019t want to write down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you write it down?\u201d I asked in a whisper.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot yet,\u201d he said. \u201cI will. I just\u2014I needed to think. I needed to get a little distance and perspective and try to sort out what I saw.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did<\/em> you see?\u201d I asked softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cA battle,\u201d he murmured, staring at the wall. \u201cOur friends on the wall. Your brother was giving orders. It\u2014I don\u2019t know how long from now it\u2019ll be. I didn\u2019t see you or I there. It was cold but there wasn\u2019t snow. The wind was bitter. There was an army out there, marching\u2014coming. It was huge. I remember wondering how they\u2019d survive it, how they\u2019d turn them back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you see how they did it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom shook his head slightly. \u201cNo. I woke up when the first volley of arrows was loosed. It\u2014I don\u2019t want to think about it but I have to, you know? How do we defend against things like that? Whatever magic we\u2019re learning to muster\u2014that\u2019s not always going to be a solution. We\u2019re not going to keep getting lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, we\u2019re not,\u201d I agreed. My arms tightened slightly. I could understand why he didn\u2019t want to think about it. I didn\u2019t, either. But at the same time, I knew he would keep thinking about it, wouldn\u2019t stop until he\u2019d come up with a solution.<\/p>\n

That was Thom, it was what he did. It was part of why I loved him.<\/p>\n

It was also something that I was terrified would kill him someday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
