Rory was the one cooking, looking like he\u2019d only slept a few hours after getting off the late watch. He leaned over the skillet, heedless of the flames, scraping and tossing the hash against the cast-iron surface, humming a quiet, lilting tune as he worked despite the dark circles beneath his eyes.<\/p>\n

Is there ever going to be a day when we don\u2019t have to post watches at night to make sure that something\u2019s not going to attack us out of the darkness? That something\u2019s not going to try to take advantage of our need for sleep?<\/em><\/p>\n

Hecate had gone more than enough nights in her life without sleeping for fear of some sort of attack. She knew what it felt like, knew it wasn\u2019t an experience she was keen on repeating\u2014especially not anytime soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou just get up, Rory?\u201d Marin asked as she started to fix a pot of coffee, carefully staying out of Rory\u2019s way.<\/p>\n

He glanced at her, then back to the skillet. \u201cAbout half an hour ago. Couldn\u2019t sleep any later. Probably could have used it, but it just wasn\u2019t happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marin nodded. \u201cHave you seen Jay around?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe and Leinth took a walk,\u201d Rory said, drawing the skillet away from the flames for a moment so he could test the level of doneness of the hash\u2019s components. \u201cThey headed out to the barrow, I think, but he didn\u2019t seem to think they\u2019d be too long. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust hoping to have him take a look at Thom, that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate blinked at her as she settled down on one of the split log benches. \u201cIs something more wrong now?\u201d It didn\u2019t sound like it was when we were talking, but…<\/em><\/p>\n

Marin shook her head. \u201cNo. He\u2019s healing, just not as fast as either one of us would like, that\u2019s all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate nodded slowly, drawing one leg slowly up to her chest, suppressing a wince as her stitches tugged again.<\/p>\n

Maybe it can wait a little longer.<\/em><\/p>\n
