It was twenty minutes before he\u2019d banked the fire and put up what he\u2019d been working on, ready to head down from the forge toward a spot near the ravine where they\u2019d be field-dressing the deer. It was a little spot near Tala\u2019s smokers, which she still tended despite having the twins to keep track of as well\u2014though she\u2019d begun to teach several of the others to tend them, too, at Kellin\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p>Shoving his hands into the pockets of his jeans, Matt made his way down from the forge to the shady spot. Hecate\u2019s merry laughter echoed up to him and he smiled faintly. He wasn\u2019t sure what had made her laugh, but he also wasn\u2019t certain he wanted to know, either.<\/p>\n<p>Marin was standing nearby, baby Lin cradled in one arm as Hecate stood next to her, watching Rory and Tala working on the butchering. The twins sat in the grass nearby on a blanket, enjoying the summer sunshine. Matt let out a low whistle as he approached.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a decent-sized deer, Rory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, not bad for heading down to check snares,\u201d he said. \u201cStartled me and then I startled it. Figured it\u2019d be good for a few meals, plus whatever Tala salts and smokes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tala grinned, nodding. \u201cThis\u2019ll feed us for a little while, at least. We\u2019ll stretch it as far as we can before we take another. I know the Wild Hunt\u2019s been down, too, though they\u2019re a little better at this than we are, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly some of them,\u201d Marin said, shaking her head with a grin of her own. \u201cThey\u2019re not necessarily hunters\u2014just warriors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA true statement,\u201d Hecate said, reaching a hand out for Matt. \u201cJust because they\u2019re hunters of men doesn\u2019t make them huntsmen of anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt winced slightly as his fingers slid into hers. \u201cThough some are both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hecate glanced at him, her gaze softening, growing sad for the barest second. \u201cAye,\u201d she murmured. \u201cSome are both.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[This post is from Matt&#8217;s point of view.] True to his word, Matt wrapped up what he was doing, though not nearly as quickly as he would have liked.
