The birds were singing in the trees and Hecate squeezed her eyes shut, eyes still stinging as she slid her arms around Matt\u2019s waist, hanging on. He took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly, rubbing her back gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you okay?\u201d he asked quietly, cheek resting against her hair.<\/p>\n

She sighed softly. \u201cI don\u2019t know. I think so, other than\u2014than what I told you about. Even that\u2014\u201d Hecate broke off with another sigh, frowning as she leaned her cheek against his shoulder. \u201cI don\u2019t know what it means. It\u2019s healing but it\u2019s not healing fast and I don\u2019t know what that means. That\u2019s\u2014that\u2019s why I\u2019m scared, why I hadn\u2019t said anything because I just don\u2019t know what it means.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe stabbed you with your own blade,\u201d Matt murmured. \u201cThey\u2019re enchanted weapons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor my protection,\u201d she whispered. \u201cNot to be used against me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s probably why it\u2019s not worse.\u201d He reached up, running his fingers through her hair as he looked down at her, meeting her teary gaze. \u201cI know that the old weapons like that do more damage to people like you, gr\u00e1 mo chro\u00ed<\/em>. It\u2019s just how they\u2019re made reacting to something in you. I\u2019m sorry it harmed you so.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut my hand healed fine,\u201d she whispered. \u201cSlow, but fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThink about what you just said,\u201d Matt said. Hecate frowned then let out a weak laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cDamn.\u201d She shook her head slightly. \u201cI\u2019m such an idiot. Why didn\u2019t I think about that before?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt pressed a kiss to her forehead. \u201cBecause you were busy being worried. I know how that happens\u2014it happens to a lot of us.\u201d He peered down at her for a few seconds. \u201cYou should still probably have Jay take a look, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will,\u201d she said. \u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I see him, I\u2019ll drag him off by the ear to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt laughed. \u201cWell, maybe not as soon as you see him. But today or tomorrow, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay.\u201d Hecate squeezed him gently, the knots in her belly finally starting to loosen. \u201cI just didn\u2019t want you to worry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI worry about a lot of things,\u201d Matt said quietly. \u201cMost of those things aren\u2019t within your control to make me stop worrying about\u2014though I appreciate the effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m happy here, Matt.\u201d<\/p>\n

He exhaled. She could almost see a weight lifting from his shoulders.<\/p>\n

She let go of his waist and reached for his hand as she straightened up. \u201cWe can be happy here. Together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether,\u201d he echoed, fingers twining in hers. He squeezed her hand gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlways,\u201d she added, then started walking again. The wind brought with it the faint smell of the cookfires, of lavender and the woods and a dozen other scents that helped drain away a little more tension, a little more stress.<\/p>\n
