\u201cThough I would hope that you would answer my question,\u201d Anselm said, still staring straight ahead. \u201cThe one you seem to think you so neatly sidestepped.\u201d<\/p>\n

Seamus\u2019s jaw tightened slightly. \u201cWhat question would that be, old friend?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho\u2019s coming, Seamus?\u201d Anselm asked softly.<\/p>\n

Seamus snorted softly. \u201cWho isn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen who are you so worried about? You don\u2019t ask favors like this because of diffuse concerns. Typically there\u2019s something specific driving you. Your gut, in this instance, is not an acceptable answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course he would ask. Of course. <\/em>His lips thinned. Anselm\u2019s brow furrowed and he leaned closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it that you don\u2019t want to tell me, Seamus? What bone is stuck in your bloody throat?\u201d<\/p>\n

He took a deep breath, then another, exhaling slowly after each. He watched the sparring match end without seeing it, waited until another had begun before he finally spoke, the words coming thickly from his throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sisters,\u201d he said, his voice a whisper. \u201cThey\u2019ll come for vengeance against my cousin and against the people here. I don\u2019t know if they\u2019ll come before Leviathan returns or after\u2014one may bide their time and wait until the other has depleted us before they sweep in to mop up what\u2019s left. I fear they\u2019ll come sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t take revenge on a corpse,\u201d Seamus said. \u201cAnd I doubt that they\u2019d cross Leviathan were we to join him, so I doubt they\u2019d take the risk of us doing just that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou assume they know more than they might, old friend,\u201d Anselm said. \u201cThey may not know that Leviathan walks. They may not know what he plans even if they do\u2014and they certainly may not know that he\u2019s made overtures to the people here if they\u2019re aware of what he plans to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I assume any other way, we may lose,\u201d Seamus said, his voice grave. \u201cSo I assume what I must\u2014planning for the worst as I hope for a best outcome that\u2019s likely not to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrying to get ahead of things,\u201d Anselm murmured.<\/p>\n

Seamus nodded. \u201cAs best I can.\u201d<\/p>\n
