The bottom dropped out of my stomach, a sudden chill seizing me in an iron grip. \u201cThom,\u201d I said quietly, struggling to keep my voice steady as I asked the question again, \u201cwhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOther than this damn fever?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I said, resting my palm against his cheek. He leaned into my hand, his face hot against my skin. \u201cSince I\u2019m pretty sure that\u2019s not what you want to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thom choked on a quiet chuckle and shook his head slightly. \u201cNo. Hell no, it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen what?\u201d I edged a little closer, tucked one leg up underneath me. I hadn\u2019t intended to linger for too long, but the others wouldn\u2019t miss me, at least not for a while yet\u2014and if they did, it didn\u2019t matter. This was more important.<\/p>\n

This would always be<\/em> more important.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been having dreams again,\u201d he said, squeezing his eyes shut, as if the weight of my gaze was too much. \u201cVisions of the past, not the future. Finn\u2019s memories.\u201d<\/p>\n

My breath caught. His fingers flexed in mine as I squeezed his hand. \u201cYou never talk about those,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

He shook his head slightly. \u201cNo, I know. I just\u2014it\u2019s uncomfortable sometimes, that\u2019s all. The whole as it was before so will it be again bullshit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know it\u2019s not. It just feels like it sometimes.\u201d He exhaled, opening his eyes and staring at the ceiling. \u201cIt\u2019s just that this time, everything is centered around one thing and I can\u2019t figure out what it means. Hell. I\u2019m not sure I want to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biting my lip, I nudged him gently. Thom blinked at me, then scooted over in the bed, toward the wall, leaving room for me to curl up beside him. He watched me with a concerned look on his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cMar, I didn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never do,\u201d I said, cutting him off before he could tell me he didn\u2019t mean to worry me. \u201cIt happens anyway.\u201d I wrapped one arm around him and the baby, resting my head against his on the pillow. \u201cKeep talking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRight.\u201d He sucked in a breath. \u201cI\u2014do you remember anything about the invasion?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich one?\u201d I asked, my tone dry. \u201cIt seems like there were a few.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she<\/em> came,\u201d Thom murmured, shifting his hand to rest on my arm, thumb rubbing back and forth against my elbow. \u201cDo you remember that?\u201d<\/p>\n

A shiver shot through me. \u201cWhich \u2018she,\u2019 Thom?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCyhyraeth.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt sick and squeezed my eyes shut. I must have stayed silent for too long because his fingers wrapped around my arm at the elbow and squeezed gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarin\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I whispered, feeling sick. \u201cNo, it can\u2019t. It can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not possible.<\/em><\/p>\n
