\u201cMar?\u201d<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t heard the sound of Matt\u2019s footsteps as I stood staring at the fire, and it startled me. Lin made a sound of distress as I jumped, turning quickly toward Matt.<\/p>\n

He winced. \u201cSorry. Didn\u2019t mean to scare you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is everyone?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged in response. \u201cNot sure. I\u2019ve been talking with Jay and Leinth and Hecate.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped down to around the level of my knees. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong? Something\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t deny it, just snagged the kettle and started to fill it. I stood there watching, Lin cradled against my chest. I started to feel sick.<\/p>\n

\u201cMatt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019d you disappear to?\u201d he asked quietly, glancing back at me. \u201cIt\u2019s been hours.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was with Thom,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cWhere did you and Hecate vanish to?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe needed to talk.\u201d He hung the kettle over the fire and stayed crouched beside it for a few moments, elbows resting against his knees. \u201cYou and I need to talk, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d I asked, sitting down on one of the split logs before I could manage to fall down. \u201cMatt, what\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than I realized,\u201d he murmured. \u201cAre you going to want some coffee?\u201d<\/p>\n

The question jarred me for half a second. I managed to nod. \u201cYeah, that\u2019d be good. Now are you going to tell me what\u2019s up?\u201d<\/p>\n

He took a deep breath, exhaled it slowly, then nodded, starting to load the coffee press. \u201cYeah, sorry. Trying to get my own head in order, you know? There\u2019s a lot all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs she okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

For a second, he froze, then took another breath and finished loading the coffee press. \u201cThat\u2019s a loaded question.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Matt nodded. \u201cYeah. It\u2019s complicated. I guess I can start there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStart<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n
