It was strange, the quiet, coupled with eh storm, and it was setting his teeth on edge far more than he thought perhaps it should have been.<\/p>\n<p><em>Of course, it could be nothing. It may very well be just that\u2014nothing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tala turned at the sound of their footsteps, smiling. \u201cYou just missed Marin,\u201d she said, turning back to tending a massive pot of something over the largest of the cookfires. \u201cShe went to check on Thom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said she was going to do that when I said I\u2019d go round up Matt,\u201d Hecate said, sitting down on one of the logs. \u201cThat\u2019s why I took Lin\u2014in case Thom decided he wanted to get ambitious and get out of bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matt winced. \u201cSomething tells me that\u2019s still not a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tala shrugged. \u201cI don\u2019t get into it one way or another. That\u2019s Marin\u2019s battle to fight, not mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Not mine, either, but something tells me that someday I\u2019ll be fighting that battle just the same right alongside her.<\/em> Matt shook his head. \u201cThere still any coffee hot?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver there,\u201d Tala said, waving a hand toward one of the sideboards. Matt managed a crooked smile and got down a pair of mugs, one for him and the other for Hecate. \u201cMade it for Mar. Does your sister ever sleep anymore, Matt?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s probably not a question for me,\u201d he admitted. \u201cDid you want some?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tala shook her head. \u201cNot right now. If there\u2019s still some later, I\u2019ll have some.\u201d She exhaled quietly, scrubbing a hand over her eyes. \u201cStorm makes me nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe storm\u2019s making everyone nervous,\u201d Hecate said quietly, still fussing with Lin\u2019s swaddle. One of his arms was still free, fingers still wrapped around one of her braids. She didn\u2019t seem terribly inclined to disengage those fingers, either. \u201cSomething feels wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that\u2019s not the story of our lives, I\u2019m honestly not sure what is,\u201d Tala said, her voice heavy with irony. \u201cShit feeling wrong has been a pretty constant thing since rocks starting raining out of the sky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrue story,\u201d Matt muttered, bringing one of the mugs over to Hecate and settling down beside her. In a few minutes, he\u2019d go and get the warhammer Hecate had saved for him for all of the centuries between the moment she\u2019d lost Ciar and the day Leviathan had come to threaten them in her home out on the cliffs.
