\u201cWhat do you think it is?\u201d<\/p>\n

Tala\u2019s voice jarred her from her thoughts, so badly that Hecate nearly spilled coffee all over herself and Lin. She took one slow breath, then another, trying to reorient herself to where and more importantly to when<\/em> she was.<\/p>\n

Focus. Get it together.<\/em> She squeezed her eyes shut and blew out a quiet breath.<\/p>\n

Tala came around the fire toward her, casting a quick glance back toward her sleeping children to make sure that they were, in fact, still sleeping before she moved too far from them. Concern filled her voice and it made Hecate\u2019s throat tighten a little. \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

She swallowed hard and nodded, steadying. \u201cYeah. Yeah, I\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m okay. I was just\u2014just somewhere else for a few minutes.\u201d Somewhen, really. Powers that are and were and will be again, why was I thinking about <\/em>that of all things? Why that moment?<\/em><\/p>\n

There had to be a reason.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou do that, too?\u201d Tala watched her for a few seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot really,\u201d she admitted, setting down her mug and scrubbing a hand over her face. \u201cI was just remembering something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tala nodded knowingly. \u201cThat makes sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes it?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded again. \u201cYou\u2019ve had a long life, Hecate. There\u2019s a lot of stuff that you\u2019ve lived through that none of us could dream of\u2014in our wildest dreams or most terrifying nightmares.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hecate choked on her laugh, squeezing her eyes shut again for a few seconds. \u201cThat is certainly one way to put it,\u201d she managed. As her eyes blinked open again, she focused on her nephew, asleep in her arms. Her lips thinned for a few seconds. \u201cYou asked me who I thought it was, didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s likely Leviathan,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s my best guess. He won\u2019t stay away forever.\u201d<\/p>\n
