It\u2019s in your nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Phelan snorted humorlessly, crossing his arms tightly against his chest. \u201cYours, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus nodded. \u201cAye. It is and I know it. I accept it, own it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I,\u201d Phelan said. Seamus gave him a sideways look and Phelan smiled ruefully. \u201cMost of the time, anyhow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus smirked. The expression faded a few moments later as he surveyed the southwestern horizon again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should go to the fire,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cI can keep watch here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho said I was keeping watch?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus looked at Phelan and gave him a familiar crooked smile. \u201cI know you, Phelan, and I know you haven\u2019t changed that much. You\u2019re here keeping watch and pretending to clear your head. I know the latter isn\u2019t happening\u2014if anything, there\u2019s more rattling around in there now than there was when you climbed up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t think that has something to do with the company?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus shrugged. \u201cIt might, but I suspect it would have happened whether I was here or not. Go. You\u2019ll do more good there than here. We both know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seamus smirked again, crossing his arms. \u201cNow you\u2019re just being deliberately difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe.\u201d Phelan sighed. Another shiver crept down his spine, goosebumps rising along his arms. The wind\u2014what little of it there was\u2014wasn\u2019t cold. \u201cI have a bad feeling, Seamus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all do,\u201d his cousin said quietly. \u201cWe\u2019ve been trained for it, conditioned for it. But if it\u2019s something or if it\u2019s nothing, we\u2019ll survive, as we always do. We\u2019re trained for that, too.\u201d He fell silent for a few seconds, watching the clouds. \u201cWe\u2019re meant to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeant to?\u201d Phelan watched him for a few seconds, saw one corner of his cousin\u2019s mouth quirk upward in a smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome now,\u201d Seamus said softly, his voice mildly chiding. \u201cWe both know that I didn\u2019t tell you everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, no,\u201d Phelan agreed. \u201cBut usually you don\u2019t play games like this.
